Emerge Member Becomes a Big Brother - July 20, 2005

After seeing the blog entry on May 26 about Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Emerge Member Kevin Terrell of SunTrust Banks was motivated to make a difference and become a Big Brother. Following is Kevin's experience as a big brother.


Thanks for printing the May 26 BLOG article asking for Big Brother/Big Sister volunteers. The article made me realize that I could be responsible for enriching someone else's life by giving up just a few hours of my time each week. I volunteered and within about a month, I met my little brother. Ty is an active 8 1/2 year old boy in need of a friend to do things with. Last weekend we attended a Big Brothers / Big Sisters picnic together and now we are making plans for this Saturday. Going into this, I knew that I would be giving my time, but I never dreamed of the joy and satisfaction that I would be receiving in return.

Pack The Bar/ Relay for Life - July 19, 2005

We did a great job "packing the bar" which had an excellenet turn out. With food and drinks what more could Emerge members need? We saw a lot of new members turn out and sign up and some old members who had not made previous events. I know we even had 2 new members who moved here recently from Buffalo, New York and a group of new members from Florida Southern's Athletic Department.

Eunice, an Emerge member who works for the The American Cancer Society discussed the upcoming Relay for Life fundraiser to be held on March 25. Relay For Life is the national signature activity of the American Cancer Society. There are numerous ways to get involved with Relay. Putting a team together and serving as its captain; joining a team; walking the opening lap if you are a cancer survivor; working on the organizational committee; being a corporate sponsor; being a volunteer for a few hours during the event ... there is some way for everyone to take up the fight through Relay For Life.

Best Places to Live - July 11, 2005

Ron White Coming to the Lakeland Center - July 7, 2005

Comedian Ron White is scheduled to appear at the Lakeland Center on Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7, 2005. The Friday show is already sold-out, so the Thursday night show has been added. Tickets go on sale this Friday (July 8th) at noon.

Ron 'Tater Salad' White was part of the famous Blue Collar Comedy Tour and is my favorite of the four 'blue collar boys'.

Anybody else planning on going?

YMCA Par 3 - Home of The First Tee of Lakeland - July 6, 2005

As many of you are aware, there has been a tremendous transformation happen right before our eyes on George Jenkins Boulevard. You may have seen, or played at, the Par 3 golf course that was formerly located there. Though it sat vacant for a short period, it is now the YMCA Par 3 - Home of The First Tee of Lakeland, which celebrated their grand opening back in March 2005. This is a Lakeland community partnership that is bringing the game of golf to the youth of Lakeland with all backgrounds to teach honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. Many businesses and individuals in Lakeland made the project possible.

The facility consists of a newly renovated, nine-hole, par-3 golf course, a driving range and a clubhouse. The First Tee program offers "progressive levels of instruction," which include golf lessons and life skills for youth ages 6 to 18. Players participate in classes that last 6 weeks. Also available, are open practice sessions with instructors, classes that teach the fundamentals of golf at various levels, and nine-hole developmental tournaments (to learn rules and etiquette of tournament play in a relaxed environment). The greens fees, range fees, and golf club rentals are all offered at very reasonable rates. They also offer teen fun nights and individual youth lessons. Annual memberships are available that allow youth to participate in The First Tee golf instruction and Life Skills Clinics.

If you get the chance, stop by the YMCA Par 3 or take a child there to enjoy a round of golf. I think the Mission Statement of the First tee Program says it all: "To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf."

Job Order # 9635 - Must have the physical, developmental and mental ability to perform job tasks, work efforts, responsibilities and duties of the job illustrated below:

POSITION DUTIES: Develops, implements and provides supervision of marketing, sales and promotional activities for tourism/sports markets that generate overnight stays in Polk County accommodations and creates economic impact in Polk County. Assists Sales and Event Manager with creation and implementation of the tourism/sports marketing sales plan. Travels extensively promoting Polk County as a sports destination. Targets and develops niche markets that increase overnight stays in Polk County. Directs comprehensive sports sales efforts by planning and coordinating sales missions in target markets.

Responsible for assisting the Sales and Event Manager with budgeting, financial control and analysis. Coordinates sales and marketing presentations to consumer and organizational decision makers about Polk County and to encourage and enhance the selection of this area as a tourism/sports destination. Generates and qualifies leads using sports/tourism computer database and other sales methods. Prepares follow up reports, analysis and information. Assists the Sales and Event Manager in the coordination and operations of Polk County owned and co-owned special events, including but not limited to securing venues, volunteer recruitment, completion of special event bid applications, on-site special event set-up and management. Develops and manages special event budgets including revenue projections, expenses and value in-kind. Negotiates and secures room blocks and rates for special events, conferences and meetings held in Polk County.

Develops and maintains mailing lists for current and prospective clients, area news contacts, state, national and international decision makers. Develops and assists in the design of sales and marketing materials. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of sales, marketing, public relations and communications techniques and methods. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, clients, business representatives and the public. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to make public speaking presentations. Ability to conceive, design, formulate and prepare informational data, analyze data, reports and survey information. Ability to use independent judgement, analyze information and formulate recommendations. Ability to prepare budgets and tactical sales strategies. Ability to coordinate and plan meetings, conferences and special events. Skilled in word processing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an accredited four (4) year college or university and have a minimum of three (3) years sales, marketing or business related experience. Must have a valid drivers license and be able to secure a valid Florida drivers license at the time of employment. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

JOB LOCATION: Tourism/Sports Marketing Office- Bartow, FL

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday

HIRING RATE: $18.09 per hour - (Pay Grade 21/0346)
