Kiwanis Club Annual Peanut Auction - August 31, 2006

Peanut Auction: Silent and Live Auction

The Kiwanis Club of Lakeland’s Annual Peanut Auction is just over a week away with this year’s proceeds benefiting the Bethany Center – a non-profit organization that provides grief counseling & support groups for children or teens who have lost a loved one. Please mark your calendars for 11:30am on Friday, September 8 for the start of the Peanut Auction – led by Lakeland’s own Marty Higgenbotham.

Great items of all kinds will be available for bid, both silent and live auction.

Peanut Auction funds raised will be donated to the Bethany Center for the improvement & development of a series of therapy rooms & expressive play areas for the children & adults that they serve.

Assistant Director of Annual Funds for Leadership Giving
Florida Southern College

Reports to: Director of Annual Funds
Qualifications: Four-year degree required, preferably in public relations or marketing
1-2 years experience in higher education fundraising or equivalent

Position Description: The assistant director of leadership giving works directly with the director of annual funds to plan and implement the unrestricted annual giving programs of Florida Southern College with the goals of increasing alumni participation and building a greater base of support for the College. The assistant director focuses on stewardship and growth of the Spivey Society, the College’s unrestricted leadership giving program. Additional responsibilities include assisting the director of annual funds in conducting campaigns to solicit alumni, parents, faculty/staff, and friends of the college for annual contributions in support of the operating budget.

Wheely Amazing Art is seeking volunteers for the Polk Museum of Art Family Day on September 16th. There are 2 sessions available for volunteers, 9am-12pm and 12pm-4pm. Music & Martinis - August 17, 2006

Music & Martinis is a collaborative effort presented by the Imperial Symphony Orchestra and sponsored by The Lakeland Center and Aramark.

This year there are six restaurants/bars that have each selected a non-profit to benefit from this event and have created a "Signature Martini" for the evening. The restaurants/bars and their non-profits are:

210 City Club - for Florida Dance Theatre
Bonefish Grill - for Polk Museum of Art
Cafe Panino (Airport) - for SPCA of Polk County
Cafe Panino (Dixieland) - for Imperial Symphony Orchestra
Louis Mack's Steakhouse - for Historic Polk Theatre
Tanner's Pub - for Citrus Center Boys & Girls Club

Saltwater Grill and Bernie Little Distributors are teaming up to produce a "signature martini" with Spykes.

There will also be FREE sampling of Budweiser Select beer.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door (to cover event expenses and your $5 donation). Each ticket includes:
-$5 general donation
-$5 donation to the non-profit of your choice
-2 martini tickets
-ballot to vote for your favorite martini
-light snacks and live music, including a performance by The Imperial Symphony Orchestra

Extra martini tickets will be available for $5 each.

August Luncheon with Dr. Larry Ross at Florida Southern College - August 14, 2006

On Thursday, August 10th EMERGE members and guests gathered for a buffett lunch at Florida Southern College to listen to Dr. Larry Ross discuss the book, Good to Great, by Jim Collins. Dr. Ross has been with Florida Southern College since 1993 and is the Anne and Bill France Distinguished Professor of Business and the coordinator of the FSC Graduate Program. During the discussion of Good to Great Dr. Ross talked about the Pyramid of Leadership, the 5 Levels of Leadership and their characteristics, the Hedgehog Concept, and much more. He also recommended some other business books for young professionals including:
