Calling all Males: Volunteer applications being accepted for Camp Brave Heart - February 25, 2009

What: Volunteers are Needed for the 2009 Bethany Center of Good Shepherd Hospice's Camp Brave Heart. Camp Brave Heart is an annual grief camp for children ages 6-16. It includes horseback riding, swimming,canoeing, and camp fires.

Who: Male volunteers over the age of 18 who have an interest in working with children and like the outdoors! They need cabin volunteers and workers behind the scenes for the weekend; one day volunteers for Friday and Saturday; and smiling faces to greet the buses on Sunday at the Auburndale and Sebring offices. If you want to help we have a spot for you! You can help make a difference in a child's life!

When: March 20-22nd

Where: Circle F Dude Ranch in Lake Wales

Each participant will need to go through a background check and

The Watson Clinic Foundation and Arts in Medicine need your help. - February 21, 2009

When: April 3, 2009
Where: Downtown Lakeland First Friday event (Kentucky Avenue from Main Street to Lemon)

What: The Watson Clinic Foundation hosts a program called Arts in Medicine. This program is housed in the Center for Cancer Care & Research and is a tremendous outreach to patients and their families as they undergo treatments in their battle against this dreaded disease. The program has many forms: craft projects, music therapy, painting programs and bead projects, to name just a few. They will be showcasing their art at the Downtown Lakeland First Friday Event on April 3rd and they are looking for volunteers to help man creative areas for approximately 4 hours. JLGL Fourth Annual World of Reading Festival - February 19, 2009

The Junior League of Greater Lakeland (JLGL) will hold its Fourth Annual World of Reading Festival at Barnett Park by the Lake Mirror Promenade in downtown Lakeland on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free to the general public and provides an opportunity for children to learn through participation.

Upon arrival, each child will receive a passport. The attendees will then visit five countries and take part in an arts and crafts activity related to that particular region of the world. As the children exit each country, their passports will be stamped. After receiving all five stamps, the children will select a free Scholastic book to take home.

Last year, more than 650 children attended, and the JLGL anticipates a crowd of 800 children this year. In addition, the JLGL is excited to announce a guest performance by popular children’s singer/songwriter Jack Hartmann who will take the stage at 9:30 and 11 a.m.

“We are thrilled to have children’s musical sensation Jack Hartmann join us this year,” JLGL President Stacey McLaughlin said. “His music is educational and research-based, and equally important, kids love him!”

Other participants include the Lakeland Police Department, Lakeland Fire Department, Boys & Girls Club, Learning Resource Center , Huntington Learning Center , Success by Six and Parkland Puppets. Throughout the day, attendees will experience guest readers and performances, as well as inflatable activities for entertainment.

The Drug Prevention Resource Center invites you to attend Rx for Lakeland 2: A Prescription for Drug-Free Teens - February 10, 2009

Prescription for Lakeland 2 will feature Bob Stutman. Mr. Stutman is a former Special Agent of 25 years with the US Drug Enforcement Administration. His last six years with the DEA he headed the New York Office, DEAs largest. He is the drug consultant for both PBS and CBS News, and is considered the “foremost expert on the drug issue” by Governor Mario Cuoma.
