George W Harris Youth Shelter and Youth & Family Alternatives 5K Walk/Run - May 14, 2013

The goal of the George W Harris Youth Shelter and Youth and Family Alternatives ("YFA") is to help families ensure a healthy and safe enviroment in which to flourish... a nurturing, supportive environment free of drugs and alcohol abuse, free from physical emotional and sexual abuse.

As one of the area's leading providers of social services to children and families, they are dedicated to strengthening the family throughout their many programs.

In every task they perform, the professional and support staff at YFA realize that for children to be the hope of tomorrow, they must be given the help they need today.

THEY BELIEVE CHILDREN ARE OUR MOST PRECIOUS RESOURCE Success Story "John" entered the shelter at age 17. His mother did not know what to do with him as she saw him using drugs and failing in school. John entered the shelter with resistance, but also wanted to get away from his family. Once he arrived, he had a quick turnaround. John realized and understood the help and counseling he was receiving was because people cared about him. During the stay, John decided that he was going to update a video on drug prevention to present to future youth at the shelter. John and his mother are now advocates of the shelter and actively speak to civic organizations so that they can help other families in need.
