Lakeland Filmmaker to Unveil Documentaries at Polk Theatre - August 24, 2009

Wednesday, August 19, 2009-- LAKELAND, FLA-- Many Americans are unaware that throughout the world, poverty-stricken children rummage through mountains of toxic trash in search of recyclables to sell for meager wages.

The founders of the Trash Mountain Project are working to open a few more eyes to the plight of these children on Tuesday, Aug. 25 when they present “Live the Command,” the release of two documentaries they created about trash dump communities in Honduras and Cambodia.

The documentary presentation is at 8 p.m. at the Polk Theatre and is free to the public, said Trash Mountain Project president and co-founder Michael G. Barrett.

“My goal is to get everyone in attendance to use their influence to tell others about the problems associated with families living in trash dump communities throughout the world,” Barrett said. “We will share the stories we’ve documented about the people in Cambodia and Honduras, and then it is up to those who hear those stories to determine how or if they want to help.”

Through a partnership with Southeastern University’s “Hunger and Thirst” team, baby formula will be collected at the event to be shipped to Honduras in December when a Trash Mountain Project team goes there to build homes, Barrett said.

“Typically, babies in these communities are given Tang or coffee grounds instead of milk or formula,” he said. “This will be a tremendous gift to these families.”

Copies of the documentaries also will be available for attendees who wish to share them with volunteer organizations, including civic organizations and church groups. A $5 donation is requested for each DVD.

The Trash Mountain Project is a non-profit organization that Michael G. Barrett and Brett Durbin co-founded after a trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras in November 2008 to film a documentary about families living in the neighboring trash dump community. While filming, each felt a call to focus on raising awareness for children and families in trash dump communities throughout the world, Barrett said.

“I’ve never known a call anymore clear than when in Honduras,” he said. “I knew I was to use my gifts and talents to help bring hope and life to a people who have very little hope. Serving the least and last of the world has been the blessing of a lifetime.”

For more information on the documentary release event or on the Trash Mountain Project, please visit the organization’s Web site: www.trashmountain.com.

SALTIMBANCO: Cirque Du Soleil is coming to Lakeland for 5 days only! - April 24, 2009

SALTIMBANCO: Cirque Du Soleil
Full of color, amusement and amazement, Saltimbanco is a fun show for the whole family to enjoy, a great outing for everyone!

What:

A High Intensity, Acrobatic Spectacle. Saltimbanco -from the Italian "saltare in banco", which literally means "to jump on a bench"-explores the urban experience in all its myriad forms: the people who live there, their idiosyncrasies and likenesses, families and groups, the hustle and bustle of the street and the towering heights of skyscrapers. Between whirlwind and lull, prowess and poetry, Saltimbanco takes spectators on an allegorical and acrobatic journey into the heart of the city.

Saltimbanco is a Cirque du Soleil signature show inspired by the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colorful inhabitants. Decidedly baroque in its visual vocabulary, the show's eclectic cast of characters draws spectators into a fanciful, dreamlike world, an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope.

When:
Wednesday, April 29th 7:30pm
Thursday, April 30th 7:30pm
Friday, May 1st 3:30 & 7:30pm
Saturday, May 2nd 3:30 & 7:30pm
Sunday, May 3rd 1:00 & 5:00pm

Where: Lakeland Center

Cost:

Help Lakeland SPCA Win Million Dollar Makeover - January 7, 2009

The Lakeland SPCA needs your help, and you can do it with very little effort on your part. Simply visit www.zootoo.com/makeover and create an account so you can vote for our local shelter to be the recipient of a $1 million makeover.
The last time I checked, the shelter was in 15th place. We can do better than that! The good news is that even if the Lakeland SPCA shelter doesn’t win but still places in the top few spots, there are valuable prizes that can be won.
So if you’ve been looking for a cause to get involved in but don’t have a lot of spare time or money to donate, here is your golden opportunity to get involved and help a worthy cause.
If you do have the extra time and money, the SPCA always is in need of donations and volunteers. I am a volunteer foster parent and have volunteered at a few SPCA events, so I can tell you from personal experience that it is a fun and rewarding time. Visit www.lovemyspca.com for more information.

LDDA Downtown Branding Campaign - July 28, 2008

Dear EMERGE Members:

The Lakeland Downtown Development Authority (LDDA) is embarking on a Downtown Branding Campaign. We invite the EMERGE members to participate in a focus group of their choice with the branding firm on Monday, July 28th in City Hall (228 South Massachusetts Avenue), City Commission Conference Room, 3rd floor.

The focus groups are as follows:
10:00 – 10:45 AM - Chamber, LEDC, Lakeland Vision
1:15 – 2:00 PM – Historic Lakeland, Historic Preservation Board, Historic Districts
2:15 – 3:00 PM – Polk Theatre, PMA, Symphony, Lakeland Community Theatre, Platform Florida
4:15 – 5:00 PM – Business owners, business people

The purpose of the focus groups is for the branding firm to interview you, our stakeholders.

“Branding” is more than the creation of a logo and a slogan. We will be creating a positioning statement that will encompass both a “voice” (“What is Downtown Lakeland?” or “What do you want Downtown to be?”) and a “look” (develop the look, a logo, objectives, color standards and ultimately a book of standards that will affect all communications).

The purpose of this project is to establish Downtown Lakeland with a sense of place that will continue to attract and increase our exposure to new businesses, residents and visitors in Downtown Lakeland.

We need your help! If you have any questions, please give Becky or me a call 863-687-8910. I appreciate your help.

Sincerely,
Anne Furr

Workforce Housing Summit - May 7, 2007

Download file

Thank you for making time to read the attached flyer regarding a very important Workforce Housing Summit. We would appreciate you forwarding the flyer to those in your sphere of influence who you think should be made aware of the Summit and should attend. The Summit is designed to bring together business leaders in our community to better understand the challenges facing Polk County regarding WORKFORCE housing and work together toward a solution.

In 1999, the median sales price for a house was $78,600. Today it is $179,300. The enormous increase in the cost of housing is having a significant negative impact on the ability of our employees to buy homes.

Please attend this important Workforce Housing Summit – your participation is important in addressing this critical issue.

Please RSVP by Email/Fax to Polk Vision at info@polkvision.com or 863/619-7307. For more information please contact Polk Vision at 863/646-0439.

5th Annual Noah’s Ark
Mud Volleyball Tournament
Saturday, October 7, 2006

What
This is a “must do” event…it’s a full day of “mud-slinging” fun. There are 8-10 players on a team (you must have at least 2 women on the court during play) all wallowing in a foot or so of mud.

Who
The teams are typically comprised of a mixture of company employees, friends, neighbors, teachers, college students, policemen and firefighters, party animals, CEOs, politicians (they can legally get away with slinging mud and lie about the scores) basically, our players are people who want to get together... get a little crazy... and have a lot of fun.

When Saturday-October 7th
8:45 am Team Check-In (Captains Only)
9:15 am Express Check-In (Teams W/Completed Registrations)
9:30 am Captain’s Meeting (Scorekeeper’s Table)
10:00 am Competition Begins (PLAYERS MUST WEAR SHOES)

Where
USA International Speedway in North Lakeland, Florida
(From I-4, take Exit 38 (SR 33) north, ½ mile)

Why
The Mud Volleyball Tournament raises money to help provide meaningful employment, recreational and social activities and affordable housing choices to individuals who are developmentally challenged.

Visit our website at: http://NoahsArkFlorida.Org

“We’re All In This Together”

How
Registration is only $250 per team (after September 25th it’s $300).

This entitles your team to compete in a bundle of fun activities including the “Main Tournament”, the coveted “Potty Bowl Tournament” (unique awards) and the “Iron Man Tug-Of-War Competition” (macho stuff here), limbo and hula-hoop contests and (new this year) modified horseshoe throwing competition. There will also be a dunk tank available for your closest friends.

What About Club Mud?

“Club Mud” is the ultimate party experience and is ONLY FOR
Mud Volleyball Professionals (WARNING: Don’t try this at home).

Team players earn Club Mud privileges by collectively raising donations of $1,000 or more (over and above their registration fee).

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is a huge social issue that affects one in four women. The HopeLine Project, sponsored by Verizon Wireless, is a wireless phone collection. We will have a collection box at the EMERGE table at Politics in the Park, so please bring your used, old, and broken cell phones and drop them in the box. Feel free to also collect phones from your workplace, friends, and family! The phones will all be donated in Polk County to the Peace River Center, Polk's domestic violence agency.

ADMISSION WILL BE FREE THAT WEEK-END and Museum hours will be Saturday, 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Joel Meyerowitz is one of the most respected color photographers working today. His first book Cape Light is considered a classic work of color photography. He has had one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and over 250 other museums.

On September 23, 2001, Meyerowitz took his camera to the site on which the World Trade Towers had stood. For the next eight months he recorded the process of clearing the wreckage and coping with the tragedy. At first denied permission to photograph the site, Meyerowitz persisted and became the only photographer able to work within the wreckage. His efforts are a testament to the power of documented history. AFTERMATH includes 31 images selected from the thousands he shot, two of which are monumental: one measuring 8’ x 10’ and the other 8’ x 22’.

The idea for the exhibition came from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. A version of the exhibition was inaugurated by Colin Powell in the spring of 2002. To date, millions of people from across the globe have viewed these startling and beautiful images.
