Workforce Housing Summit - May 7, 2007

Download file

Thank you for making time to read the attached flyer regarding a very important Workforce Housing Summit. We would appreciate you forwarding the flyer to those in your sphere of influence who you think should be made aware of the Summit and should attend. The Summit is designed to bring together business leaders in our community to better understand the challenges facing Polk County regarding WORKFORCE housing and work together toward a solution.

In 1999, the median sales price for a house was $78,600. Today it is $179,300. The enormous increase in the cost of housing is having a significant negative impact on the ability of our employees to buy homes.

Please attend this important Workforce Housing Summit – your participation is important in addressing this critical issue.

Please RSVP by Email/Fax to Polk Vision at info@polkvision.com or 863/619-7307. For more information please contact Polk Vision at 863/646-0439.

Mud Volleyball!!! - September 28, 2006

If you are interested in being involved in an EMERGE Lakeland team please email kcarlson@creativecontractors.com. If there is enough interest EMERGE will coordinate a team, players will be responsible for the $25/pp cost for a 10 person team.

mud flyer 2006 copy.jpg

5th Annual Noah’s Ark
Mud Volleyball Tournament
Saturday, October 7, 2006

What
This is a “must do” event…it’s a full day of “mud-slinging” fun. There are 8-10 players on a team (you must have at least 2 women on the court during play) all wallowing in a foot or so of mud.

Who
The teams are typically comprised of a mixture of company employees, friends, neighbors, teachers, college students, policemen and firefighters, party animals, CEOs, politicians (they can legally get away with slinging mud and lie about the scores) basically, our players are people who want to get together... get a little crazy... and have a lot of fun.

When Saturday-October 7th
8:45 am Team Check-In (Captains Only)
9:15 am Express Check-In (Teams W/Completed Registrations)
9:30 am Captain’s Meeting (Scorekeeper’s Table)
10:00 am Competition Begins (PLAYERS MUST WEAR SHOES)

Where
USA International Speedway in North Lakeland, Florida
(From I-4, take Exit 38 (SR 33) north, ½ mile)

Why
The Mud Volleyball Tournament raises money to help provide meaningful employment, recreational and social activities and affordable housing choices to individuals who are developmentally challenged.

Visit our website at: http://NoahsArkFlorida.Org

“We’re All In This Together”

How
Registration is only $250 per team (after September 25th it’s $300).

This entitles your team to compete in a bundle of fun activities including the “Main Tournament”, the coveted “Potty Bowl Tournament” (unique awards) and the “Iron Man Tug-Of-War Competition” (macho stuff here), limbo and hula-hoop contests and (new this year) modified horseshoe throwing competition. There will also be a dunk tank available for your closest friends.

What About Club Mud?

“Club Mud” is the ultimate party experience and is ONLY FOR
Mud Volleyball Professionals (WARNING: Don’t try this at home).

Team players earn Club Mud privileges by collectively raising donations of $1,000 or more (over and above their registration fee).

The benefits of being a member of Club Mud are:
● FREE Drinks (all kinds) ● FREE Food
● FREE Event Tee Shirt ● Private Restrooms
● Your Own Mud Servants* ● FREE Live Entertainment

Hope Line Project at Politics in the Park - September 20, 2006

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is a huge social issue that affects one in four women. The HopeLine Project, sponsored by Verizon Wireless, is a wireless phone collection. They are taking used, broken, and old cellphones from any manufacturer and turning them into literal lifelines for victims of domestic violence. We will have a collection box at the EMERGE table at Politics in the Park, so please bring your used, old, and broken cell phones and drop them in the box. Feel free to also collect phones from your workplace, friends, and family! The phones will all be donated in Polk County to the Peace River Center, Polk's domestic violence agency.

Museum Honors Polk County First Responders/Emergency Personnel & Families - April 21, 2006

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, APRIL 29 AND 30, 2006

POLK MUSEUM OF ART HONORS POLK COUNTY FIRST RESPONDERS/EMERGENCY PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES

On Saturday, April 29, and Sunday, April 30, Polk County firefighters, police officers and other first responders and their families are invited to Polk Museum of Art to view the powerful new exhibition entitled AFTERMATH: Images from Ground Zero, Photography by Joel Meyerowitz. The exhibition will be on display from April 22 through July 9, 2006. ADMISSION WILL BE FREE THAT WEEK-END and Museum hours will be Saturday, 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Joel Meyerowitz is one of the most respected color photographers working today. His first book Cape Light is considered a classic work of color photography. He has had one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and over 250 other museums.

On September 23, 2001, Meyerowitz took his camera to the site on which the World Trade Towers had stood. For the next eight months he recorded the process of clearing the wreckage and coping with the tragedy. At first denied permission to photograph the site, Meyerowitz persisted and became the only photographer able to work within the wreckage. His efforts are a testament to the power of documented history. AFTERMATH includes 31 images selected from the thousands he shot, two of which are monumental: one measuring 8’ x 10’ and the other 8’ x 22’.

The idea for the exhibition came from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. A version of the exhibition was inaugurated by Colin Powell in the spring of 2002. To date, millions of people from across the globe have viewed these startling and beautiful images.
